Tips to Prevent Feet from Swelling

Preventing swollen feetSome of the most relieving sensations in the world involve taking off or letting down something restrictive after a long day. It’s that feeling of unlatching your ski boots, or letting your hair down, or putting up your swollen feet. Of course, edema in your feet and ankles is different. While ski boots and hair up-dos are voluntary, puffy feet and ankles are not. They are a symptom of other issues. The good news is that they aren’t inevitable—you can actually prevent swollen feet and avoid all the discomfort of tight feet trapped in your shoes.

Feet swell because fluid leaks from your blood vessels and collects in your lower limbs. This is pretty normal when you spend too much time either sitting or standing without moving around. Added body weight can make it worse, too. Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep the leaked fluid from pooling in your lower limbs.

Exercise is one of the best ways to prevent swollen feet. This boosts your circulation and works your muscles regularly, both of which help your body reabsorb leaked fluid and prevent the problem. Exercise also helps you lose weight, which can alleviate swelling as well.

Even when you don’t exercise, avoid sitting or standing in one position for an extended period of time without a break. Adjust your position and move around every couple of hours. This is especially important when you travel.

Limit your salt intake and stay hydrated throughout the day, too. Stay cool in hot environments as much as possible. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products. If you’re prone to swelling, you may benefit from wearing compression socks or stockings.
