How Can I Eliminate My Fungal Infection in My Toenail?

Hi. I’m Doctor O. My patients ask me all of the time, “How can I get rid of my fungal toenails?” At Podiatry Associates, we have added a hyper blue laser as another option that is FDA approved to help eliminate fungal infections in your toenails. The toenail laser is a safe treatment with little pain. Some people feel a warming sensation. There are no side effects or drugs required. There is no liver enzyme test required. There’s no recovery time; just walk in and walk out in about 30 minutes, as this is the time [it takes] to treat both feet.

So how does the laser work? The laser light causes a temporary increase in the heat in your nails. The laser light passes through the toenail without causing damage to the nail or the surrounding skin. At the time of the procedure, the toenail will not become instantly clear, as it takes months for the nail to grow out.

Will the fungus come back? There is a chance of reinfection because fungus is present everywhere in our environment. It is very important that you disinfect your shoes in order to kill existing fungus. We recommend that you purchase a SteriShoe Ultraviolet light to kill any existing fungus in your shoes or boots. We also recommend, if the fungus is present in one toenail of one foot, we recommend that all of those toenails be treated. There is very likely fungus in the other toenails that we can’t yet see.

Is this covered by my health insurance? If you have a health savings account or medical IRA, 100% of the costs can be covered. However, in most situations, this procedure is considered aesthetic; therefore, health insurance plans do not provide coverage.
