How can I prevent heat-related illnesses?

Learn heat-related illnesses when temperatures are soaring

Staying safe in summer’s rising temperatures can be a challenge. Though our bodies naturally cool themselves, some of us may be at

a greater risk for problems caused by extreme heat. For instance, those under age 4 or over 65 are more susceptible. Other contributing factors include obesity, heart, lung, and kidney diseases, certain medications, and alcohol abuse.  Of course, excessive sun exposure and

dehydration can increase your risk as well.  In order to prevent heat-related illnesses it is important to stay smart during the summer months. Here’s how:

Drink plenty of water!  Replace salts and minerals lost during heavy sweating by grabbing a

sports drink.  Wear lightweight, loose clothes and use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15.  Avoid the sun while it’s at its strongest from late morning to midafternoon. If you’re feeling overheated, utilize cool, air conditioned areas when you can.  It’s extremely important to not leave children or pets inside an automobile as its interior temperature rises drastically in just minutes. If you experience heavy sweating, muscle cramps, excessive tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, or fainting, you may have heat exhaustion.  Drink a glass of water and rest in a cool environment or take a cool shower or bath as soon as possible.
